I'm getting a tablet! I didn't think I'd be able to get one for ages because they're so expensive, but I did a search for curiosity's sake yesterday…I found a couple of semi-affordable older model Wacoms on Amazon…and then found a little-known brand called Monoprice. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=113&cp_id=11303&cs_id=1084101&p_id=6251&seq=1&format=2#description The model I'm getting has a larger active area than most Wacoms and really good reviews. And it's $50!
So yeah, super excited now. Can't wait til I can try it out!

I completed the second half of my exercise in spheres. Again, following the tutorial here: http://darkdesyre.deviantart.com/journal/Art-class-101-Digital-painting-beginning-exercise-214215970
I used the direct painting method this time. I also experimented with creating a shadow. It's not great, but it at least adds some depth. I must say, that was pretty fun. :)
